Canada is providing over $120 million in new funding to support the people of Sudan and neighboring countries impacted by the ongoing civil war. The announcement was made by the Honourable Randeep Sarai, Secretary of State (International Development), at the International Sudan Conference in Berlin. The funding aims to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan, which has been marked by war crimes, widespread displacement, sexual violence, and famine.
More than $94 million of the contribution will be allocated to humanitarian assistance in 2026, delivered through experienced partners. This will provide essential life-saving aid, including emergency food and nutrition, healthcare, protection, shelter, water, and sanitation to vulnerable populations affected by the crisis in Sudan, South Sudan, and Chad. A further $25 million will go towards new development assistance in Sudan. This includes $18 million to Save the Children Canada to deliver safe, quality education for over 60,000 children and protect them from violence and trauma. An additional $7 million will support the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) in expanding sexual and gender-based violence prevention and response services across the country, including in Darfur and Kordofan.
Canada is also allocating $1.25 million to expand peace and stabilization efforts, including civilian-led initiatives. The Canadian government has expressed grave concerns regarding the situation in Sudan, where the conflict has led to the world's largest human displacement crisis and the collapse of essential services. The support package aligns with Canada's foreign policy priorities, emphasizing the need for rapid humanitarian access, civilian protection, and a permanent ceasefire in Sudan.
The Canadian government is committed to working with international partners to address the urgent needs of the Sudanese people and contribute to long-term stability in the region. This substantial aid package reflects Canada's ongoing commitment to humanitarian assistance and development in Africa, particularly in regions facing conflict and instability.
