Frustrated with long wait times for passport applications, the federal government has announced a bold new initiative: guarantee passport processing within 30 business days, or the application is free. The move comes after years of complaints from Canadians, particularly following the surge in demand after pandemic travel restrictions eased. The program aims to restore confidence in the passport system and ensure Canadians can travel without undue stress.
The initiative will apply to new passport applications submitted on or after April 1, 2026. According to government officials, the 30-day processing time includes both in-person applications and those submitted by mail. The clock starts ticking the moment the application is received. If the passport isn't processed and mailed out within the 30-day window, the applicant will receive a full refund of the application fee.
"We understand the importance of having a valid passport in a timely manner, whether it's for business travel, family vacations, or visiting loved ones," stated Karina Gould, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, in a press release. "This new guarantee is our commitment to Canadians that we are taking concrete steps to improve our services and deliver the efficient and reliable passport system they deserve."
The government says it has invested heavily in modernizing its passport processing infrastructure, including hiring additional staff and implementing new technologies to streamline the application process. They are confident that these measures, combined with the financial incentive, will significantly reduce wait times and improve customer satisfaction. The effectiveness of the program will be closely monitored and adjustments made as needed to ensure its success.
