Avalanche Extend Defenseman Brett Kulak's Contract

The Colorado Avalanche announced Friday they have signed defenseman Brett Kulak to a five-year contract extension, keeping him with the team through the 2030-31 season. The new deal carries an average annual value of $4.5 million. Kulak, 32, was acquired by the Avalanche in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins on February 24, 2026. He quickly became a valuable contributor, especially during the team's playoff run.

Kulak played in all 13 of Colorado's playoff games in 2026, tallying five points (one goal, four assists). His overtime goal in Game 5 of the Second Round against the Minnesota Wild proved to be the series-winner, propelling the Avalanche to the Western Conference Final. This clutch performance cemented his importance to the team.

Originally from Edmonton, Alberta, Kulak brings a wealth of experience to the Avalanche's defense corps. He has played in over 660 career regular-season games with multiple NHL franchises since 2014. His commitment to durability is underscored by his current ninth-longest active "Iron Man" streak in the NHL, with the last 370 games played consecutively. The extension ensures stability on the Avalanche's blue line as they continue to contend for the Stanley Cup.
