Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced a new partnership today that will see over $510 million invested in Alberta's local infrastructure through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF). This agreement, signed on July 29, 2026, is designed to enable municipalities across Alberta to build or upgrade essential drinking water, wastewater, stormwater, and solid waste infrastructure, thereby accelerating housing development.
Over the next eight years, the federal government will contribute more than $510 million to Alberta's infrastructure projects. In turn, Alberta will provide a minimum of one-third of eligible project costs for municipal-led initiatives, with at least $100 million specifically earmarked for projects in rural and Indigenous communities. This collaboration aims to support Alberta's goal of building 25,000 additional affordable homes by 2031.
The initiative is part of a broader federal strategy to supercharge housing construction nationwide. The Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund is intended to remove infrastructure barriers that have historically limited housing development. Eligible projects include upgrades to water and wastewater systems, which are crucial for increasing housing density and enabling new construction. Alberta is expected to submit project proposals for federal review by November 30, 2026, with a deadline of March 31, 2030, for all other projects. This agreement is anticipated to create approximately 750 skilled trades jobs annually.
